What is CEFR? The Global Benchmark

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) provides a clear and essential standard for evaluating and improving language skills. It is the worldwide standard for reviewing a singular’s language capability, ensuring consistency across international education systems.

Understanding the CEFR levels—from A1 (Basic) to C2 (Proficient)—allows learners to set appropriate goals, measure progress clearly, and align their skills with international expectations.

These levels are utilized by all advanced English language schools and are recommended for use in CVs and other professional references due to their universal recognition.

The 6 Levels of English Proficiency

A1

A1 – Beginner
